A Thoughtful HBCU College Tour Across DC, Maryland, and Virginia

An HBCU visit should leave room to listen, ask questions, walk the campus, and understand the community—not simply collect photographs at several gates. The transportation plan works best when official campus appointments lead the itinerary and each regional day is paced around the student’s priorities.

Reserve the Campuses Before the Vehicle

Each university controls its own tour calendar, registration, group limits, check-in point, parking and bus instructions, accessibility process, and late-arrival policy. Secure written confirmations directly from admissions before finalizing transportation. A campus’s main mailing address is not always the tour entrance, and an open campus does not mean a guided visit is available without registration.

The difference is operationally important. Howard currently publishes a specific Cramton Auditorium bus drop-off for group tours. Morgan directs visitors to Tyler Hall and warns that a sufficiently late arrival can cancel the guided reservation. Bowie State separates small and large group reservations and requires confirmation. Those instructions may change, so the campus communication for the travel date controls.

Campus visit information reviewed August 2026 against Howard, Morgan State, Bowie State, and Virginia HBCU admissions resources. Tour calendars, check-in requirements, and campus access can change; confirm with each institution's admissions office before travel.

Let the Student’s Questions Shape the Day

A useful visit includes more than a general walk. Identify the student’s intended major, financial-aid questions, housing priorities, accessibility needs, athletics or arts interests, and whether a meeting with a department is confirmed. Leave time to speak with admissions, observe the setting, eat nearby or on campus when arranged, and record impressions before departing.

Trying to visit too many institutions can reduce every stop to a rushed arrival. Two compatible campuses may fit one day; three often do not once formal tours, meals, walking, traffic, and check-in are counted. The chauffeur manages transportation, not admissions, campus interpretation, minor supervision, or appointment changes.

Washington and Maryland

Howard University’s main campus is in Northwest Washington. Bowie State is at 14000 Jericho Park Road in Bowie and has a MARC station beside the campus. Morgan State’s undergraduate admissions office is at Tyler Hall, 1700 East Cold Spring Lane in Baltimore. Use the exact check-in instruction from each confirmation rather than these institutional addresses alone.

Howard and Bowie State can sometimes form one day when the official tour times align. Approximate light-traffic planning ranges are 35–60 minutes between their confirmed visitor locations and 40–70 minutes from Bowie State to Morgan State. Howard to Morgan State is approximately 55–85 minutes in favorable conditions. These are not quoted or guaranteed travel times.

The exact campus entrances, traffic, weather, incidents, construction, Washington or Baltimore events, motorcades, security activity, loading, and walking can extend each movement. A Morgan visit should not be placed immediately after a DC tour without a protected margin, particularly because the university’s current visitor guidance emphasizes punctual check-in.

Richmond, Petersburg, Hampton, and Norfolk

Virginia Union is in Richmond at 1500 North Lombardy Street. Virginia State’s current tour instructions direct registered visitors to its Welcome Center in the Multipurpose Center at 20809 Second Avenue, using the Third Avenue entrance. Hampton University and Norfolk State both require their own visit arrangements; Norfolk State currently requires registration for guided tours and lists 700 Park Avenue as its main address.

Richmond and Petersburg can be paired when tour calendars support it: allow approximately 35–55 minutes between the confirmed Virginia Union and Virginia State visitor points. Hampton and Norfolk form a separate Hampton Roads day, with approximately 25–45 minutes between campuses under favorable conditions. Richmond or Petersburg to Hampton Roads generally requires approximately 1 hour 25 minutes–2 hours, while central Washington to Richmond or Petersburg may require approximately 2–2 hours 45 minutes.

These planning ranges are not guarantees. I-95, I-64, Hampton Roads bridge and tunnel conditions, commuter traffic, incidents, construction, weather, stops, and campus access can materially lengthen the day. A two- or three-day structure is usually more respectful of the student’s experience than attempting all four Virginia campuses from Washington without an overnight plan.

Airports, Hotels, and Arrival Day

For a Howard-centered visit, approximate favorable-condition ranges from DCA, IAD, and BWI are 20–40, 40–70, and 45–75 minutes respectively. Airport choice should still follow the actual flight, fare, baggage, arrival time, and onward campus route—not an unsupported claim that one airport is always most convenient.

Do not schedule a formal campus tour shortly after landing. Flight delays, immigration, baggage, rental equipment, meals, and hotel check-in can consume the apparent margin. For a multi-day circuit, choose hotels around the next morning’s first confirmed campus rather than returning to Washington after every visit. Provide each operating airline, flight number, origin, passenger mobile number, luggage, hotel, and first appointment.

Families, Schools, and Community Groups

A family may prefer a sedan or SUV; a school, church, alumni, or community group may require a Sprinter, mini-coach, motorcoach, or several vehicles. Select from the passenger count, luggage, accessibility needs, chaperones, campus vehicle rules, and comfort—not capacity alone. Group-tour rules can differ from individual visits, and larger vehicles may need a campus-designated drop and staging area.

When minors are traveling, identify the responsible adults, authorized passenger list, rooming and hotel responsibility, emergency contacts, and who may change the itinerary. DC Black Cars supplies transportation, not chaperones or custody supervision. Campus meals, admissions meetings, tickets, lodging, and tours remain the organizer’s responsibility unless explicitly included elsewhere.

Final Itinerary Review

Before dispatch, reconcile every official campus confirmation, local date and report time, check-in location, lawful vehicle entrance, passenger list, student and adult contacts, luggage, mobility needs, hotel, airport or rail data, meal window, vehicle assignment, payment authority, and final return. If admissions changes a time or entrance, send the revision through reservations so the transportation record remains current.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can private transportation be arranged for an HBCU college tour?

Yes, subject to availability and confirmed terms. A family, school, church, counselor, or community group may request transportation among confirmed campus visits in Washington DC, Maryland, and Virginia.

Should campus tours be reserved before transportation?

Yes. Each university controls its own registration, group-size limits, check-in location, schedule, visitor rules, and cancellation policy. Secure written campus confirmations first, then build transportation around the official report times and entrances.

Can Howard and Bowie State be visited in one day?

They can sometimes fit in one day when both universities confirm compatible tour times. Allow approximately 35–60 minutes of favorable-condition road time between the confirmed Howard and Bowie State visitor locations, plus loading, walking, meals, and campus check-in. The range is not guaranteed.

How many days should a Virginia HBCU tour allow?

Richmond and Petersburg may form one regional day, while Hampton and Norfolk are better treated as a separate Hampton Roads day. From Washington, a comfortable multi-campus program commonly requires two or three days, depending on official tour availability, hotel location, traffic, and the desired time on each campus.

What information is needed for HBCU tour transportation?

Provide the official tour confirmations, local dates and report times, campus check-in locations, passenger and luggage counts, accessibility needs, hotel and airport details, meal plans, vehicle preference, responsible adult contacts, and final return.
